Ft. Drum predicts traffic snarls

(Aug 2, 2012) The end of a division-wide training exercise at Fort Drum is expected to cause major traffic delays near the post today through Friday. Route 26 between Route 3 and Route 11 will be full of military traffic through the end of the week as the 10,000 soldiers who took part in the Mountain Peak training exercises return from the field.Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible, as longer-than-usual delays are expected at stop signs and traffic lights. The exercises began July 23. [full story]

Crown Point bridge remains closed; structural "failure" a risk

(Oct 19, 2009) There's still no word on how long the Crown Point Bridge will be closed. Friday afternoon, state officials in New York and Vermont abruptly shut down the span across Lake Champlain. An inspection found that cement piers holding up the massive structure have eroded so badly that it could collapse at any moment. Thousands of travelers now face detours of 80 to 100 miles. As Brian Mann reports, local officials are furious about the closure and say they want answers for how the historic bridge was allowed to deteriorate.
Heard Up North: A trip to DMV with stickers that won't stick

(May 22, 2009) If you’re frustrated that your vehicle's inspection or registration sticker is peeling off the windshield, don’t fret. It’s not your fault, or your mechanic's, for not cleaning the glass first. The state Department of Motor Vehicles says a batch of 2010 stickers are faulty and won't adhere to the windshield. You can fix the problem with scotch tape, the agency says, or you can stop by your local DMV office to get new ones at no charge. That's what David Sommerstein did for today’s Heard Up North.
A "rooftop highway," mile by mile

(Dec 3, 2008) The "rooftop highway" is almost mythical in northern New York. The idea of an Interstate linking Watertown and Plattsburgh, through Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam, and Malone, has been bouncing around since the 1950s. It's seen as a key to economic development in the North Country. New York's department of transportation estimates the whole project would cost $2 billion and take decades to build. So the DOT is taking public comment on a new plan to take the smallest of steps forward—a passing lane here, decongesting intersections there, maybe even a bypass. 75 people came to last night's meeting in Canton. Few were pleased with what they heard. David Sommerstein reports.
Spitzer to referee Canton road dispute?

(Oct 3, 2007) A group of residents are taking on the state department of transportation over a proposed middle turning lane on Route 11 in the village of Canton. The stretch in question is a tree-lined residential neighborhood of historic homes. Residents are trying to get Governor Spitzer’s attention when he visits Potsdam next week. As David Sommerstein reports, word is they’ve already succeeded.
(Jun 17, 2005) Martha Foley talks with Phil McLaughlin, owner of The Coffee Room in Warrensburg, about how traffic is moving in the village. Warrensburg is one end of the Adirondack Northway detour caused by a mudslide earlier this week.
(Jun 15, 2005) Interstate 87 remains closed in both directions between exits 23 and 25 in Warren County. Boulders and debris came tumbling down a hill and swept across all four lanes of the Adirondack Northway in the town of Bolton Monday night. Governor Pataki visited the scene yesterday afternoon.
