Anatomy of a Winter Carnival Parade

(Feb 11, 2013) This weekend marked the close of Saranac Lake's 116th Winter Carnival. One of the big draws every year is the home-made parade.Dozens of floats and marchers make their way through the heart of the village, in an event that's one part New Orleans Mardi Gras and one part backyard theater. The trick each year is to match the theme of the Winter Carnival as cleverly as possible, using materials that range from cardboard to old garbage can lids to yarn.
(Feb 13, 2012) February is a big month for winter carnivals in the North Country, with celebrations from Lake George to Old Forge. Saranac Lake just wrapped up its big winter carnival last night, with a slide show and fireworks on the shore of Lake Flower. Our Adirondack bureau chief Brian Mann was master of ceremonies for this year’s carnival parade in Saranac Lake. As the festivities were wrapping up, he sent this audio postcard.
Carving a castle of ice in Saranac Lake

(Feb 10, 2011) For more than a century, a palace built of ice has been the central focus of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. Local volunteers design and build the structure out of ice blocks based on the Winter Carnival theme. This year, it's "Medieval Times", and photographer Mark Kurtz used his camera to profile the team of sculptors who filled the castle with frozen furnishings.

(Feb 8, 2008) The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival wraps up this weekend, with more fireworks and a big parade, and of course one of the biggest ice palaces in years. For the last eighteen years, Mark Kurtz has had a front-row seat for the celebration. He's the official photographer of the Carnival. His big outdoor slideshow Sunday night is one of the most popular attractions. Kurtz told Brian Mann that he thinks of his work as a way of holding up a mirror to the community.
Saranac Lake Winter Carnival on Thin Ice

(Jan 25, 2002) Winter Carnival season is almost here. Across the north country, towns and villages will hold parades and concerts—and they'll crown their winter royalty. But one thing in short supply this year is cold weather. As Brian Mann reports, thin ice and sparse snow may mean smaller celebrations and fewer tourists.
