How same-sex military couples feel about benefits news

(Feb 12, 2013) Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced yesterday that in line with the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, some spousal benefits will be given to same-sex service members and their partners. The federal law known as the Defense of Marriage Act still prohibits many of the major spousal benefits, like housing and health care, from being extended to same-sex couples. But Panetta's announcement still had advocates for gay service members cheering.
(Sep 12, 2012) Tomorrow's Republican primary vote across New York is being shaped by last year's vote on same-sex marriage. Some GOP lawmakers, including Assemblywoman Janet Duprey from Clinton County and state Senator Roy McDonald from Saratoga County, crossed party lines to support gay marriage. Now they face challenges from more conservative Republicans who say the vote was a mistake.
Remembering a gay landmark in Burlington

(Jun 29, 2012) June is traditionally Pride Month for the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community – a month that celebrates the diversity and culture around the community. The month typically culminates in a parade or Pride Festival. In our region, Pride events were held earlier this month in Syracuse and Albany. Ottawa and Montreal will hold festivals and parades in August. Burlington’s Pride event will be held the weekend of September 22nd.Six years ago this month, the gay bar known as 135 Pearl closed its doors in Burlington. It’s now a Papa John's pizzeria. But for more than 10 years it was a mainstay in the gay community. Sarah Ward is a recent graduate of the Documentary Studies program at Burlington College. She never went to Pearl's, but was fascinated by the hole created when the bar closed. She produced this audio postcard.
(Apr 19, 2012) A Kentucky man who survived childhood abuse and learned to forgive will share his story with audiences in Canton and Potsdam. You might remember Nathan Hoskins’ StoryCorps segment that aired a few months ago on Morning Edition. In it, he tells a friend how his family first learned that he was gay and how he was held at gunpoint by his mother. Since then, Hoskins has traveled the country speaking to community and college groups about his painful childhood and his resolve to fulfill his dreams. Todd Moe spoke with him about “coming out” to his family and the response he’s received since his StoryCorps interview aired on NPR.Nathan Hoskins will share his story of surviving childhood abuse this Sunday at 7 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton and again Monday at 6 pm at SUNY Potsdam in Kellas Hall, Room 103.
(Mar 13, 2012) A new, ecumenical church community has been formed in Saranac Lake that's trying to appeal to those who feel marginalized by the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The Crossroads Catholic Community, founded by the Rev. Christopher Courtwright-Cox, bills itself as a non-judgemental, independent religious community that welcomes gays and lesbians, and women as priests, yet still retains most Catholic traditions and practices.
(Jul 5, 2011) In 2006, Burlington writer James Lantz’s first play, The Bus, was a surprise hit. The play, about two boys who pursue a forbidden relationship late at night in a church bus, drew crowds and glowing reviews. It’s set in a small town and deals with gay teens, sexuality, religion and homophobia. An off-Broadway theater is giving Lantz an opportunity to present his play to big city audiences this fall. James Lantz has written three other plays, including American Machine, which was a co-commissioned project of The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. As an award-winning filmmaker, he has produced, written and directed over 200 commercial films, videos and live events. Todd Moe spoke with him about The Bus and its off-Broadway debut in October.
