In the garden: trellises and other structures 07/19/10
It's kind of jungle-y in lots of gardens this summer. Hot weather and drenching rains in many parts of the region are fueling what can seem like miles of vines, from beans and cucumbers to clematis and honeysuckle. Amy Ivy tells Martha Foley how trellises and other garden structures can help the garden grow. (send us a picture of your trellis, fence, or pergola: e-mail to martha@ncpr.org)

Scientists are searching both sides of Lake Champlain for toxic blue green algae. According to this morning's Burlington Free Press, tests of algae blooms found on the Vermont side of the lake this week haven't found any toxins yet, but the Vermont department of health’s warning about the algae's poisonous potential remains in effect.

Dave Winchell is with New York's Department of Environmental Conservation. He told Jonathan Brown DEC crews haven't found blue green algae on the New York side yet, but they’re looking. More...

Flash flood watch across northern New York and Vermont 07/09/10
The National Weather Service forecasts heavy rains across northern New York and Vermont.

A flash flood watch is in effect across the North Country through Sunday morning. Meteorologists say the region can expect downpours and isolated flash flooding.

And they say, "This threat will slowly shift into Vermont tonight and continue into Saturday, before slowly diminishing by Sunday afternoon."

Meteorologists say the rain will be erratic and occasionally very heavy:

"Given the convective nature of the showers and thunderstorms, rainfall amounts will vary greatly from one place to another. Some locations will receive less than half an inch, while others - especially across the higher terrain of the Adirondack and Green Mountains - will have the potential to see 1 to 3 inches, with isolated higher amounts in a very short period of time. This very heavy rainfall will cause flash flooding and sharp rises on local streams and rivers. In addition, some minor low-lying flooding will be possible."

Heat wave pressures power grid, and takes a toll on people 07/08/10
The East has been roasting. The likelihood of just mid-80s tomorrow sounds downright delectable after four days of a steamy heat wave.

The National Weather Service forecasts less brutal heat throughout the region, though it's still likely to be uncomfortably humid.

As the heat and humidity of this “Bermuda high” continue, so does the heat warning from the weather service. Today’s warning remains in effect until 8 tonight. As Jonathan Brown reports, the hot spell is taking a toll. More...

The North Country is caught in the same summer heat wave that’s gripping much of the eastern US and Canada.

For most people, the heat means a lot of time spent with the air conditioner, or a trip to the local swimming hole.

But our reporter Brian Mann and his brother Allen decided that the best place to cool off was the top of Noonmark Mountain in the High Peaks. Brian sent this audio postcard.
