"Poor man's fertilizer"

Spring snow. It effects people in different ways. Some try to see our recent weather in a positive light. And because this is the North Country - where spring snow is just another symptom of the region's famous cold - people have special names for this weather.
North Country Public Radio gave listeners a chance to share some of those names. And that led Jonathan Brown to a series of conversations with people across the region.  Go to full article

Ice dams flood two North Country communities

Local officials watched nervously Monday across the North Country as rivers rose with early spring rain and melting snow. Ice dams were the big worry. A bottleneck of ice on the Great Chazy River forced residents to evacuate neighborhoods in Champlain. Another dam on the Ausable River triggered flooding in the town of Jay, where a state of emergency was declared. Brian Mann was in the village of Ausable Forks yesterday when crews fought to dislodge one of the massive clots of ice. He sent this report.  Go to full article

Ausable ice jam breaks

A flood warning remains in effect through this afternoon along rivers and streams in Clinton, Essex, eastern St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, as well as parts of Vermont. Officials from both Essex and Franklin counties were watching as an ice jam at Ausable Forks moved downstream this afternoon, and the river was falling. Emergency officials also reported an ice jam and flooding in Champlain. Evacuations were underway. Brian Mann was also watching the Ausable. He spoke with Martha Foley at midafternoon.  Go to full article

Seniors struggle to stay warm

Remember a couple months ago when it felt like spring on Christmas Day? If this winter has taught us anything, it's that warm spells aside, the North Country still has bitter cold and heavy snows. The deep winter hits senior citizens especially hard. Many older people lack the money, health, or energy to keep their homes warm. As David Sommerstein reports, help is out there, but many programs go underused.  Go to full article
