Rain does little to ease North Country drought

As we've been reporting, the region's recent dry spell has hurt some farmers and forced at least one municipal water provider to use back up pumps. In Oneida County, the executive administrator declared a water emergency yesterday. The County gets much of its drinking water from Hinkley Reservoir. The basin at the southwest corner of the Adirondack Park is at its lowest level since it was created in 1915. Emergency management officials estimate that without rain, Hinkley Reservoir could be completely dry in 10 days. Officials in the Adirondacks lowered fire danger levels to moderate, but, as Jonathan Brown reports, many North Country counties are still worried about wild fires.  Go to full article

Small wild fires plague Adirondacks

As we reported yesterday, low water levels and a shortage of rain have brought drought conditions to the region. There are showers in the forecast for the next few days, but fire officials are still concerned about dry conditions. yesterday, three small wild fires were burning in the Adirondack backcountry. Canal agency mulls tapping upstate reservoirs

Water levels in some central New York reservoirs have hit all-time lows. This is forcing state officials like Carmella Mantello, the director of New York Canal Corp., to get water from secondary or even tertiary sources.  Go to full article

Fall colors emerge

Trees across the North Country and Vermont are showing their fall colors. Foliage season only lasts a few weeks in late September and early October.
