"Leaf Peepers" Keep an Eye on Fall Colors

The North Country's colorful fall foliage continues its somewhat slower progression this season. A warm spell this month has resulted in a slower than usual change in the leaves, with near-peak colors expected to make their first appearance this weekend in some of the higher elevations of the Adirondacks. Todd Moe talks with Jim Carroll, of Tupper Lake, who is an official state "leaf peeper." He and his wife file weekly fall color reports from their living room window to the tourism office in Albany.  Go to full article

Rt. 56 Repairs to Take Weeks, Months

A major route connecting the St. Lawrence Valley and points south will be closed for two months, maybe more. Heavy rain over the weekend washed out two spots along Rt. 56 south of South Colton. Department of Transportation engineers and safety inspectors were on the scene as the waters receded. DOT public information officer Mike Flick told Martha Foley they found the damage was worse than expected.  Go to full article

Rising Oil Prices Mean High Heating Costs

With energy costs rising substantially for a second year, and oil prices hitting new record highs, home heating bills are expected to soar. Heating oil prices in the North Country are already up 6% this month, to $2.34 a gallon. That's 80 cents higher than last September. Propane and natural gas prices are also skyrocketing.

The price of heating oil is of particular concern in the region, since the North Country uses a disproportionate share statewide of heating oil. In rural districts, far from gas pipelines, some families will bear the winter in old housing stock. At these prices, that spells trouble.  Go to full article
