North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik attended a small White House briefing with fellow Republicans yesterday over the news that a Russian intelligence agency offered bounties to the Taliban for every confirmed kill of NATO forces in Afghanistan. The revelations came from a New York Times story on Friday, which indicated that the White House knew for a few months and didn’t act.

Stefanik joined seven other Republicans from the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs panels. Usually, briefings are bipartisan. According to Politico, leading House Democrats are expected to head to the White House this morning.

In a statement, Stefanik said “As the Representative and Chief Advocate in Congress for Fort Drum and the soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division, the most deployed unit in the Army, I will continue to work with the Administration to ensure that our number one priority is force protection and protecting our national security.” She added that she anticipates more White House briefings on “this important matter in Afghanistan.”

According to the Watertown Daily Times, Stefanik’s opponent in November, Tedra Cobb, yesterday urged Stefanik to call for an independent investigation into Russia and the Trump administration.
